Start-up Nation? Slave Wealth and Entrepreneurship in Civil War Maryland
نویسندگان
چکیده
Slave property rights yielded a source of collateral as well as a coerced labor force. Using data from Dun and Bradstreet linked to the 1860 census and slave schedules in Maryland, we find that slaveowners were more likely to start businesses prior to the uncompensated 1864 emancipation, even conditional on total wealth and human capital, and this advantage disappears after emancipation. We assess a number of potential explanations, and find suggestive evidence that this is due to the superiority of slave wealth as a source of collateral for credit rather than any advantage in production. The collateral dimension of slave property magnifies its importance to historical American economic development. JEL codes: D2, G2, J4, L2, M2, N21, N81

Institution Shocks and the Dynamics of Wealth Distribution. Did the Abolition of U.S. Slavery Reduce Wealth Inequality?
Identifying the effect of economic institutions on the distribution of wealth and income is challenging because exogenous differences or changes in institutions rarely are observed. We investigate the effects of a particular “institution shock” -the 1865 abolition of slavery throughout the U.S. -on the distribution of material wealth. The IPUMS 1860 and 1870 US wealth censuses allow us to use a...

In his famous visit to the U.S. early in the nineteenth century, the French observer Alexis de Tocqueville was surprised by what he saw as “an equality of condition” in his travels around the country. Although he commented on the existence of wealth in the new nation, he was impressed by what he saw as its relative lack of concentration (de Tocqueville 1969). Recent studies by social historians...
